Customers Are The Point

Monday, May 25th, 2009

It is incredibly easy to get wrapped up in an intricate SEO strategy that involves testing multiple landing pages, signing up for every single new social media sensation and begging bloggers to link to your site. Putting together a high-level and energy-intensive SEO strategy is wonderful if you’ve got the time and money, but always remember that search engine optimization is a process toward a goal and not the goal itself.

The goal of search engine optimization is to increase conversion rates on your website whether this means buying a product(s), signing up for a newsletter or following a call to action. Your SEO efforts need to constantly focus on achieving this goal and each new strategy should be evaluated in the context of audience and conversion.

You’ve developed new landing pages. Great. Are more people visiting your website? If so, are they purchasing/posting/signing up?

It’s easy to get lost in lots of fancy testing models and spend gobs and gobs of time trying to increase linkage, but at the end of the day, you must balance the cost of your SEO efforts with the results you are receiving. Hold your SEO company or SEO practitioner responsible for increasing conversion rates.

If your results are lacking, go back to the basics. Is your website easily navigated? Is the content engaging, relevant and rich in key words? Is the call to action clear and easy to follow?

Never forget that SEO is a means to an end. Conversions are what counts!

As Paid Search Falls, Organic SEO More Important

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

From Brafton.com

“New statistics show that the amount of people clicking on paid search listings is dropping as organic traffic is increasing which makes proper search engine optimization (SEO) more important than ever.

According to online analysis company Hitwise, for the four week period ending May 9, 2009, paid search traffic made up 7. 25 percent of all search engine visits. This is a 26 percent drop from the same period last year.

Heather Hopkins, senior online analyst at Hitwise, says that this decrease is “at the expense of organic traffic.”

However, as Hopkins notes in a blog post on the company’s website, the number of people using search engines is not dropping, meaning more people are likely clicking on results from companies that use search engine optimization (SEO)…”

SEO From The Start

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

The best and easiest way to make sure your website achieves high search engine rankings is to take search engine optimization into consideration as you plan your site. It is always easier to implement a strong SEO strategy before a website is built.

As you are beginning to develop your website ideas, consider how your search engine optimization plan can blend seamlessly with your site’s other goals. Keep SEO in mind as you create copy for your pages, plan your layout, decide on key concepts and product names and approve any ancillary properties such as a blog or social networking page.

If you are not comfortable developing and implementing your own SEO campaign, bring in an SEO expert from the very beginning. Question your web building company about their SEO capabilities, or if they have an SEO expert on staff. If not, there are many SEO practitioners to choose from. Make sure to do your homework as there are many unscrupulous people who claim to practice SEO. Find someone who is honest and who can give you a detailed assessment and recommendations for your website.

Make sure your SEO expert is allowed full access to your website planning sessions. He/she will most likely have many recommendations on constructing the back end and front end of the site to best capture search engine attention and rankings. The SEO expert will also expect you to come up with the key words and terms that you want to rank on. Knowing these terms early will help you focus the narrative aspects of your website.

SEO can also be done on an existing site, but it is not ideal. Your SEO expert will have to work within the constraints of the existing site, which can limit certain avenues of optimization.

If at all possible, make SEO a priority from the very beginning of your website construction. The search engines are sure to notice and bring customers your way.
